He was a stranger to me. I didn't know his name and had no idea where he came from. For almost a year, he visited our bistro, where I worked part-time as a law student to pay the bills. I was well aware of the presence of the mysterious man in a perfectly fitted suit who came in and always sat at a table in my section. He always just ordered coffee, but otherwise, he never spoke to me, only watched me silently and intently. ***** Why did he stare at me so persistently? What was stopping him from speaking to me? He looked like he was fighting some inner battle, as if he had a very serious reason for not being able to communicate with me. He seemed like a dark and dangerous creature. Yet, for some reason, I felt safe in his presence. ***** But one rainy night, he made a decision. That rainy night, he said goodbye and told me we would never see each other again. And on that very rainy night, I was brutally attacked in the alley behind the bistro. ***** Now I know that the feeling of safety can be nothing but an illusion. ***** And that not every savior is a hero.
