Jack Thatch is a boy from Pittsburgh, raised by his Aunt Jo since the death of both his parents. On the sad anniversary, he visits their grave. It is there, in the cemetery, that Jack meets the peculiar eight-year-old Stella Nettleton on August 8, 1984. ***** When he sees her sitting on a bench with Dickens' Great Expectations, he has no idea how significant this meeting will be. For some inexplicable reason, he becomes obsessed with the girl and goes to look for her at the cemetery, but he only encounters her again after a year, once more on the eighth, on the same bench. The girl is surrounded by mysteries, and Jack struggles to learn anything about her. Then, at the age of eleven, after another meeting, he wakes up in a secluded alley next to a horribly burned man in pristine clothing.
