At the end of the previous installment, an unknown assailant kidnapped Melanie and attempted to kill her in a particularly brutal manner. In this book, we learn how Melanie manages to escape from a seemingly hopeless situation and narrowly avoids death. However, Jonah feels immense guilt for not helping her in her time of greatest danger, and he is tormented by feelings of remorse. Could this lead to their breakup? The horrific experience strengthens Melanie, who begins to trust herself more and sees her alleged failure with a young client, who supposedly committed suicide – or was it really that way? The gradual unraveling of the intricate twenty-five-year-old history of Talon's kidnapping becomes increasingly complicated.
