The now-classic book In Cold Blood narrates in a journalistic style the brutal crime that shook the United States in 1959, which took place in a remote village in Kansas: a pair of men, each driven to the slippery slope for different reasons, murdered four members of a farming family. The author analyzes their motives, follows the course of the murder and the subsequent detective investigation, and brings this chilling story to its conclusion by reconstructing the death sentences of both criminals. Capote's 'nonfiction novel' was first published in 1965 – and sparked a revolution in American literature. By intertwining a documentary approach, supported by patient collection of authentic material, with prose skill and aesthetic consideration, the author created a work that became not only a disturbing portrayal of a crime but primarily a symbolic message about the dark side of society. Capote's book opened entirely new possibilities for works striving for a faithful depiction of the problems and paradoxes of the modern world and became an inspiration for a number of other literary works.
