Elspeth Swanson is the last person left in the world, so she accepted a job as a nanny for a family on a remote Scottish island called Skelthsea. Her charge is a disturbing child; distracted and mysterious Mary, who hasn't spoken a word since the unexpected death of her twin brother William. To make matters worse, their previous nanny disappeared just a few days before that tragic event. Elspeth must confront Mary's defiant silence, and so she turns to the islanders. However, no one wants to tell her what happened to William. No one knows who sings haunting lullabies in the empty hallways, nor why strange dolls appear in the abandoned rooms.
