Prague, May 1942: An assassination attempt has been made on Reinhard Heydrich, the feared acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, who will succumb to its consequences eight days later. While the Nazi leadership plans a bloody retaliation, the investigation into the attack is assigned to Gestapo Commissioner Heinz Pannwitz. His ruthless rivals from within, particularly the brutal SS man Böhme, increasingly pressure him with their merciless methods to solve the case as quickly as possible and thus protect thousands of people from impending terror. Every step leads the investigator deeper into the dehumanized mechanisms of the Nazi regime – and brings him to the brink of losing his humanity. The novel draws from the memories of the real historical figure Commissioner Heinz Pannwitz and offers a fresh perspective on the period of the Heydrich era from the viewpoint of Nazi actors. It uncovers the motives that may have led them to the extermination of Lidice and the commission of other atrocities, inevitably touching on the question of guilt.
