On a sunny August morning in 1935, thirteen-year-old Sophia Gray finds her friend Rosemary wandering in the woods. Rosemary's yellow dress is stained and torn, the girl limps oddly on one leg and has empty glassy eyes. Desperately, she gestures to Sophia that she must show her something, and Sophia follows her. Twenty years after the discovery of Rosemary's body, Sophia finds herself trapped in the vast and hauntingly beautiful Asylum for the Insane in northern Michigan. She falls into the hands of a malevolent doctor who preys on patients with supernatural abilities. In the present, in 1965, Hattie, like her mother thirty years ago, is guided by a spirit. Newspapers hidden in the attic reveal a secret that has affected Hattie's life and that of her siblings. Hattie and her sister Jude embark on a quest to right the wrongs of the past and uncover the deception that stole their mother ten years ago.
