When Mike arrives at the location, he finds that the boy has already run away, and his plan is immediately uncovered by the local police. Ultimately, the cowboy finds Rafa wandering the streets of Mexico City – surviving on petty thefts and the occasional win in cockfights. Mike convinces the boy to return to Texas, and the two fugitives from the law set off on a journey north. An unlikely friendship develops between them, forcing them to reckon with the life choices made in the interest of staying 'macho.'
