The Earth was dying, and only the Erts could save it – genetically modified beings created to be physically superior, superintelligent, unburdened by human emotions, and governed solely by pure logic. And it was this logic that led them to the conclusion that if the planet was to survive, humanity must be removed from it. Now the Erts face a dilemma – the Earth is thriving again, but if they decide to resurrect the rebellious and violent species Homo sapiens, all their work could be destroyed. They prepare a test. They will raise one child – the only human who will decide whether his kind deserves to live on Earth again. But the quiet and coldly rational scientist Ima discovers that raising a human is not as easy and straightforward as she initially thought. Her life becomes a whirlwind of feeding, changing, and putting to sleep, while neighbors knock on her door with complaints. And as the human son grows, Ima realizes that there is much more within him and in the history of humanity than she ever imagined.
