The sequel again brings together the three friends who appeared in the previous book, this time on a cycling journey through the German Black Forest. The novel was written near the end of the cycling craze of the Victorian era, which was initiated by the development of the safe bicycle. It captures an era when bicycles became a well-known recreational equipment for the middle class. References to brand competition, advertising, and enthusiasts' attitudes towards their gear resonate with modern readers. At the same time, the book contains many allusions to the German Empire of the time. Just like in the previous novel, the author's fresh and intelligent humor plays a central role, which has placed both works on the list of classics.
