Beschreibung
An extensive novel inspired by the life and artistic career of the master of pantomime Jean Gaspar Debureau (1796-1846), who was of Czech descent through his mother. The author depicts his childhood and youth spent among a traveling artistic company, years of waiting for a more significant artistic success, and finally, years of triumph and recognition. In Paris, after many years, he achieved immense popularity and was loved and admired by all – from the simple audience to the representatives of the cultural elite of France at the time. The novel is not a biography in the strictest sense but primarily a psychological study of the artist's journey to express his ideas and a poetic ode to theater and human life. Based on this book, a Czechoslovak film of the same name was created in 1990 under the direction of Ivan Baladi.
