Molly Green, a seventeen-year-old orphan, is forced to go live with her "aunt" after the mysterious death of her best friend Kitty. Thus, Molly delves into the secrets of her aunt's business at night and explores her estate during the day. She cannot help but feel a mix of fascination and horror as she witnesses the anatomy lessons taking place in the chapel on her aunt's property. The lessons from the mysterious Dr. LaValle are a heady mix of knowledge and power, and Molly realizes that she has never desired anything more than to be part of the exclusively male group of students.
