Jack London was born in the winter of 1876 into the desperate poverty of San Francisco's slums. In his work, he reflects on his harsh existence through the relentless mapping of the fates of people who, like him throughout his life, face the wilderness. London faced many obstacles – shortly after winning a journalism award for his short story 'Typhoon off the Japanese Coast,' he even ended up in prison in Niagara Falls for vagrancy. The Star Rover, published in Britain under the title The Jacket, is a novel composed of short stories built around the concept of reincarnation. The book tells the story of prisoner Darrell Standing, awaiting death, who successfully confronts the horrors of prison life and the torturous confinement in a straitjacket by escaping into vivid dreams of his past lives – these include incarnations as a French nobleman or an Englishman in medieval Korea. The book, based on the life and prison years of the author's friend Ed Morrell, is one of London's most intricate and distinctive works.
