Rekviem za sen – Selby Hubert (2022)

The story of two young drug addicts from the Bronx and their girlfriend from the upper social classes. A book about what it means to be weak in a society where only the strong survive. Jewish Harry Goldfarb, his girlfriend Marion, and their Black friend Tyrone C. Love, unable to live without their daily dose of drugs, continue to dream of a better future. Through night work, they manage to earn a larger sum of money, which they use to buy high-quality heroin and get involved in its distribution. With the money they earn, they want to buy an apartment, travel, and open an art café. Parallel to this, the story of Harry's mother Sarah unfolds, a lonely widow overcoming grief and emptiness by constantly watching TV series, movies, and competitions. She still longs for her son to marry and give her grandchildren, but above all, she hopes to be invited on television and become a star of one of the shows. However, a strict diet and weight loss and calming medications lead her to a psychiatric hospital. The author presents an unvarnished picture of the hopeless existence of addiction victims trying to escape the gray and oppressive everyday life, as well as their shattered hopes.
