The town of West Hall in Vermont, USA, is shrouded in legends. Under strange circumstances, people go missing here, and residents suffer various tragedies. In the winter of 1908, just a few weeks after the tragic death of her daughter Gertie, Sara Harrison is found murdered in a field behind her home. Locals say that the ghost of the deceased Sara walks the streets of the town after dark, and people leave gifts at her door in the hope that she will leave them alone. Nineteen-year-old Ruthie Washburn has never paid much attention to the tales told in West Hall. She grew up on a remote farm with her mother Alice and younger sister Fawn, always dreaming of one day leaving the sleepy town and breaking free from the influence of her eccentric mother, who forces the family to live outside of society, without the internet and with an unlisted phone number. However, one morning, Ruthie wakes up to find that her mother has vanished without a trace. She begins to wonder if her mother's strange lifestyle might have had a deeper reason.
