Beschreibung
This Czech-language book is one of the best-known retellings of Czech history. First published in 1894, it was originally intended mainly for children and has since appeared in numerous editions. Alois Jirásek draws on familiar historical facts, chronicles, Czech and Moravian legends, and traditional folk storytelling. He vividly portrays stories from the country’s past, including the legends of Čech, Krok and his daughters, the Maidens’ War, and Křesomysl and Horymír. The book also retells stories from the Christian era, such as the legend of Bruncvík, King Ječmínek, and a collection of legends from old Prague, including the Golem, the Old Town Astronomical Clock in Prague, and Faust House. The final section contains ancient prophecies, including the Prophecy of the Sibyl and the Blaník Knights. Jirásek’s literary treatment brings these historical stories vividly to life and imbues the entire work with a strong patriotic spirit, which may be why generations of readers continue to enjoy it.
