The torturer's apprentice Severian continues his journey to the provincial town of Trax, where he was sent into exile by the guild representatives after showing kindness to a condemned woman and thus violating the guild rules. However, along the way, he also hopes to find his beloved Dorcas again and seek out the rightful owners of the Spares of the Reconciler, a powerful relic that has fortuitously come into his possession. His efforts to fulfill his obligations will take him through a dangerous mine, where instead of ore, the remnants of a distant past are extracted, through hidden corners of the ruler's residence, and the ruins of a city whose ancient high priest bore a remarkable resemblance to Severian... Gene Wolfe does not place new surprises in the path of his hero alone but also for the readers. They can look forward to a unique retelling of the myth of Theseus, a play in which the fate of the entire world is mysteriously and twistedly reflected alongside Severian's own fate, or to mischievous quotes from classic works in the second part of the tetralogy The Book of the New Sun.
