The heroine of this novel about love, death, and grief is a woman who has just closed one chapter of her life. Brynn Wilder, who teaches contemporary American literature at a university, retreats to Wharton, a tourist-favorite town on the shores of Lake Superior between the USA and Canada, for the summer after her mother's passing, to rest and recharge. In a cozy inn, she befriends several quirky individuals – LuAnn, the eccentric owner; the gravely ill Alice, cared for by a married couple with an extraordinary story; and Dominic, a young man with a movie star smile and fascinating tattoos all over his body. However, Brynn soon feels firsthand that something mysterious, perhaps even sinister, is happening in this house with a long history. Alice inexplicably knows things about everyone else that she shouldn't have been able to find out. Bad dreams and whispering voices drive Brynn at night into a room that the owner keeps locked for the season after someone unknown died there in her hotel, which had been empty and deserted all winter. The main character is also irresistibly drawn to the tattooed Dominic, despite being warned that death is following him.
