Nine-year-old Mafalda is very curious, loves stories and music, and goes to school, where she is occasionally picked up by her loyal gray-brown cat, Optimus Turcaret, in addition to her parents. However, she is still different from her peers. Her uniqueness is hidden behind her thick glasses – she suffers from a rare eye disease that is gradually causing her to lose her sight. Mafalda monitors the speed at which her illness progresses by how far away she can see her beloved cherry tree that grows by the school. She dreads the day when darkness will completely envelop her, and she writes in her diary a list of things "that matter a lot to her and that she will no longer be able to do." When she horrifiesly overhears a conversation in which her parents discuss moving, she decides to live in the treetop like her hero Cosimo from her favorite book, The Baron in the Trees, and begins planning an escape to the school cherry tree. Two people hold an important place in her life – Filippo, a troubled hyperactive boy who only interacts with her, and Estella, the school janitor, who is the only one who always tells her the truth, albeit sometimes ruthlessly, and gives her plenty of life advice.
