This boxed set contains three Czech-language adventure novels: Lost in the Land of Mammoths, The Shaman from the Land of Mammoths, and Land of Mammoths: Besieged by Fire and Ice. In the first book, the teenage boy Niam lives in one of the largest mammoth-hunter settlements during the last glacial maximum. He hunts with the others, learns practical survival skills and experiences bushcraft in its most difficult and elemental form. When his tribe flees from strangers, Niam becomes lost and wanders through the landscape alone. His slightly older sister finds him when winter arrives, but both siblings are captured by prehistoric hunters in an unknown region. Their story continues through one dramatic situation after another. The historical details are based on current findings in anthropology and related fields, including palaeobotany, zoology and climatology. With striking illustrations by Kateřina Coufalová, Pavel Radosta interprets this period in contemporary language and in light of new discoveries, following in the tradition of Eduard Štorch. Alongside authentic descriptions and dramatic scenes, the fast-paced story also allows room for comic relief. In the second book, the adventures of Niam, his sister Žíně and their domesticated wolf Bratříček continue in the land of mammoths. The story brings further tense encounters with large and dangerous Ice Age animals, struggles for survival, new meetings, friendships and first love. The heroes must overcome difficult trials, fulfil their mission and save their tribe, while a mysterious shaman plays an important role. The final volume places Niam, Žíně, now a pupil of the wise shaman, the brave Ron, Bratříček and the other inhabitants of the mammoth hunters’ camp beneath the Great Hill in greater danger than cave bears, lions or hyenas. The land of mammoths is engulfed by a vast steppe fire while unstoppable masses of ice, brought by the approaching height of the Ice Age, advance in the form of glaciers. The stories are based on current scientific knowledge about the age of mammoth hunters and are illustrated by Kateřina Coufalová.
