Mrs. Dashwood and her three daughters – Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret – must move out of such a cozy estate after the death of her husband. All the property has been inherited by John, Dashwood's son from his first marriage. They find a new home with a distant relative, Sir John Middleton, but the worries of having two daughters to marry off remain. The sensible Elinor catches the eye of the wealthy and kind Edward, and she tries to hide her feelings from her mother and sisters. The sensitive Marianne attracts the interest of Colonel Brandon. Which of these two loves will be fulfilled? Will reason triumph, or will it be emotion? The novel was published after long tribulations in 1811, at the author's expense and anonymously, and its journey to readers was not the easiest. It is now being released in a new translation by Kateřina Hilská.
