In her childhood and adolescence, Isabella experienced much: the sudden death of her royal father, a life in isolation with her beloved brother Alfonso and her mentally unstable mother, a move to the court ruled by her half-brother Henry, conflicts within the royal family and among the courtiers that lead to a civil war, and surprisingly, true love and friendship. Yet, it never occurred to her that fate had the Castilian throne in store for her... Nevertheless, she becomes the famous and controversial Queen Isabella of Castile. Through her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon, she enables the creation of a new, stronger Spain, personally participates in the war against the Moors, supports overseas expeditions (including those led by Christopher Columbus), and under the influence of the 'father of the Inquisition' Torquemada, persecutes Jews and heretics. She struggles with intrigues, complicated family relationships, and her own conscience. The Queen Isabella's Oath is one of the first works by C. W. Gortner, who has gained international recognition as an author of a series of novels about significant female figures in world history since the publication of this book (2012).
