This novel follows a mysterious child with the power to change the fate of a family living in a land torn apart by revolution. When the old nurse Reja finds an abandoned baby beneath a bridge, life in a Mexican town changes forever. Little Simonopio, discovered under a blanket of bees with a disfigured face, frightens some locals, who believe he is a child kissed by the devil. Landowner Francisco Morales and his wife Beatriz take him into their family and raise him as their own. As Simonopio grows older, he becomes an even greater mystery to those around him. Whenever he closes his eyes, he sees what others cannot: the future, both good and bad. Accompanied at every step by a protective swarm of bees, he shields his loved ones from threats posed by people and nature, changing not only the fate of the Morales family but also that of the entire town. At the same time, he must face his fear of a mysterious enemy, the threat of war, the Spanish flu and conflicts between those who want the land and those willing to do anything to save their property.
