This Czech-language novel follows Asle, an ageing painter preparing for his annual Christmas exhibition during Advent. His settled life as a widower, filled with work, memories of his beloved wife and conversations with his neighbour, is disrupted by an unexpected event: his friend and alter ego, who has the same name, needs help. Asle travels between his isolated home and the city while also moving through time, with each journey and stopping place serving as a door back to key moments in his life. Through an interior monologue arranged in long, rhythmic passages and interrupted only by transparently simple dialogues, the novel enters two parallel lives and reflects on art, faith, love and friendship. The ever-present death surrounding the main characters is contrasted with the Advent message of hope. The book is a key work by one of the most important writers of our time and was written by the recipient of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature.
