This Czech-language handbook by literary theorist Rita Felski offers a fresh perspective on how to read, perceive and use literary texts. It defends reading as an indispensable activity while seeking to bridge the gap between literary theory and an engaged, common-sense approach to reading. Felski examines the points of tension and connection involved in asking why and how we read. She argues that any attempt to explain the value of literature must begin by exploring the motives for reading in all their variety, and assumes that these motives do not exclude one another. The book presents four different ways of thinking about literature and reading: literature can help us recognise ourselves, enchant us, convey knowledge or shock us. Felski observes that the terminology of literary studies and the language of subjective reading experience have grown apart, and argues for finding a way to overcome this divide.
