Olga Tokarczuk's novel could be described as a "moral thriller." The main character of the story is Janina Duszejko, a construction engineer who has to earn a living as an English and geography teacher at a school in the Kladská Basin on the Czech-Polish border. In winter, she also works as a caretaker for summer apartments. Her passion is astrology, and above all, she loves animals. She tries to help and protect them in every way possible, fighting against people who harm them. She warns against reckless destruction of nature, seeing human destinies written in the stars. She belongs to a circle of enthusiastic readers of the English poet William Blake (the title of the book is a quote from his poem).
