Baroque Urban History
The Old Memories of Kutná Hora (1675) by Jan Kořínek (1626—1680) are an extraordinary figurative apotheosis of the prominent royal town with a glorious mining past. However, these are not traditional memoirs tied to the author's memories (which, after all, end in 1614), but rather an effort to preserve the collective memory of the place, that is, to gather as many historical documents, sources, reports, and testimonies as possible. Kořínek presents insights into mining, minting, and everyday life in Kutná Hora in a seemingly popularizing, almost journalistic manner, while also possessing a distinctly artistic ambition. The edition by Alexander Stich and Radek Lunga is now being re-released in an updated form in the Czech Library after twenty-five years.
