Beschreibung
This Czech-language novel explores destiny, freedom and the unexpected paths revealed by fate. In 1971, twenty-year-old Roberta returns to her village in southern Germany after training as a seamstress. As an only child, she is expected to take over the family farm, where work, obedience and morality matter more than coming to terms with Germany’s past, conscientious objection, feminism, pop culture or miniskirts. Roberta dreams of designing her own clothes, although she knows this will probably remain only a dream. At the same time, she loves the family farm and the physical work of living close to nature. She also loves Wilhelm, the pastor’s son. Roberta is not the only woman who remains in the village because of Wilhelm. His mother Gertrud is held there by the desire to stay close to her son, even though she detests rural life and longs to disappear into the wider world. Everything changes when both women face a serious decision and a tragic accident transforms their lives completely.
