Explore the tumultuous fates of people who engaged in the fight against the communist regime.
"Splinters of Freedom" is a new book of micro-stories by Jiří Padevět, in which the writer, bookseller, publisher, and two-time holder of the Magnesia Litera award returns to the period of communist terror established after February 1948.
The 1950s are depicted as a dark and bloody period of fateful clashes between truth and lies, desire and submission, a time that pitted hammers against guns, thoughts against ideologies, and grotesquely trampled and punished even the smallest dream of freedom. He again relies on seemingly minor moments and fragments of lives captured just before they transform into fateful moments, which he masterfully describes with a poetic intensity at times.
Through them, he recalls the heroism and failures of both well-known and lesser-known figures in our history. Their deeds continue to permeate the present — for some as a warning, for others as inspiration.
