Beschreibung
Jonathan Culler (born 1940) is currently one of the most significant American literary theorists and interpreters of the structuralist and post-structuralist tradition. His Theory of Literature (orig. 1997) has already been translated into several languages and enjoys considerable popularity in many countries, as Culler has the ability to explain even highly complex poetological and philosophical reflections in a very condensed yet comprehensible manner. He does not necessarily understand literary theory as an unchanging knowledge of given and indisputable concepts, rules, and schemas, but primarily as a way of thinking about literature that is constantly in motion and closely intertwined with other disciplines such as the philosophy of language, hermeneutics, semiotics, psychoanalysis, or cultural studies. He devotes significant space to reflections on the very concepts of theory and literature. Culler knows that questioning or 'opening up' a certain problem can sometimes mean more than providing a strict answer, even without delivering a definitive conclusion.
Culler's Theory of Literature undoubtedly aims to become a beloved guide for Czech readers in the world of literary thought.
