When you are forty and diagnosed with ADHD, it is a relief. But what next?
We usually associate an ADHD diagnosis with restless boys who disrupt and fight. However, research shows that attention disorders — whether with hyperactivity or without — affect girls equally. And they do not disappear with adulthood. Due to long-standing medical stereotypes, women are underdiagnosed, adopting unconscious compensatory mechanisms, and only when they can no longer manage the combination of motherhood, household, relationships, and work, and begin to struggle with depression or anxiety, do they receive an ADHD diagnosis. Often only after their thirties. In retrospect, many of their life mishaps are explained. Through the stories of such distracted women, the book illustrates the damage that the pressure of a neurotypical society can inflict on their lives, demanding that women with ADHD meet its expectations.
However, from the stories shared by several dozen women with the authors, hope also emerges — life with ADHD is not easy, but if distracted women recognize their difference and do not suppress their needs, but speak about them openly, society begins to perceive and accept them.
