From the depths of the ocean to the stars, one woman makes a discovery that could change the future of humanity. Leigh grows up in Rotterdam, where as a young girl she hides from her father’s violent tendencies beneath the surface of the water. Fascinated by the underwater world, she devotes her life to marine biology, travelling across the globe and studying ancient organisms. When a strange trench is discovered in the Atlantic Ocean, she joins a team of scientists searching for evidence of the first life on Earth. Their findings soon begin to challenge everything known about the origins of our species. The discoveries lead Leigh to the Mojave Desert, home to a new and ambitious space agency. As she delves deeper into its operations, she learns that the vent in the Atlantic is only one of several related phenomena around the world, together forming a pattern beyond human comprehension. Leigh realises that continuing to work for the agency means leaving behind her ailing mother and younger sister, and faces a choice with no right answer: should she stay with her family or set out on a journey across the universe?
