He stumbles through the bloody lands of Ukraine and Belarus, where the front has rolled back and forth several times. It seems that the atrocities of the war conflict evade him. Dazed and numb, he wanders through prisoner-of-war camps. His journey resembles a hypnotic pilgrimage, where everything happens inadvertently, without will and without conscience. As if he were experiencing everything in a fever or a bizarre dream, which is further emphasized by the author's exceptional, captivatingly expressive style. Only when the hero of the novel finds himself near the extermination camp in Auschwitz does his ethical consciousness awaken. There, he meets his love from his native Bukovina, the Jewish woman Sara. And he decides to save her with a desperate act.
