Beschreibung
Why do people like different things? And how does it affect their status in society? ***** In the sixties, rock music caused outrage, today rappers receive literary awards. Video games were until recently perceived only as soulless entertainment, today they are the subject of serious cultural criticism. Comics are studied at universities. However, these and other changes do not mean that the right taste has ceased to be a social currency and that the pronounced cultural hierarchies of the past have completely dissolved. ***** The book 'Rules of Taste' presents a sociological expedition into the exploration of taste, its mechanisms, and its interconnectedness with social institutions in contemporary Czech society. Based on existing knowledge from the field of cultural sociology and its own research, it addresses where taste comes from, how it is formed, and what social consequences it has. Cultural hierarchies are reflected in the structure of society, the mechanisms of gentrification of urban neighborhoods, they enter into inequalities in education, and explain many seemingly obvious circumstances of our everyday cultural consumption. In short, we find them in cafes, during job interviews, and in urban planning.
