Forever Emily is a novel about the mundane — what it is like when you have to count every penny and fate does not treat you kindly, yet you never even think that it could be different. The empathetic narrator usually comments on not only Emily's life with detachment but also reflects on the storytelling itself; he observes how others perceive her, those who know exactly who Emily is and how she should live. The result is a novel that honestly and understandingly portrays people without ambitions and interests, as well as those who do what they can to help others.
