Beschreibung
How to publish German novels and be a successful Czech publisher in the nineteenth century? The German-language library Album (1846—1861) was a staple in the Central European book market: it offered original German-language novel production of a conventional nature and competed with translations of popular foreign works that flooded the book market at the time. In the Czech lands, Kobro's Album inspired the creation of a similar series of novels — the Library of Original Historical and Modern Novels by Kateřina Jeřábková, a well-known Prague publisher and editor of the magazine Lumír. The author examines the reading appeal of the genre composition of the Album in relation to contemporary Czech fiction. Utilizing methodological insights from reception aesthetics theory and synoptic-pulsational theory, she presents the publishing operation and literary events in the 1850s as a multi-layered, internally diverse network of intercultural and intertextual connections, of which multilingualism was a natural component.
