Beschreibung

The surrender is signed, lilacs are in bloom. The war is over, but the world will never be the same again. The third part of the tetralogy envisioned by the author. The demons do not disappear but rather settle in people, often in refined disguises. Czechoslovaks welcome freedom and peace, but consciously and unconsciously slip their heads into the noose of new unfreedoms. Months filled with happy returns, new beginnings, but also brutal retributions, camouflage of dubious war careers, suicides, and disappointments. The dramatic story of the Šámal family and their found children intersects with the story of doctor and Cossack Nikolai Kelin, who once fled Russia only to face post-war arrest by the NKVD here and miraculously escape deportation to Siberia. The robbery murders of German priests in Broumov are "met" with the story of a rescued camel being taken by scouts to the Prague zoo. Václav Černý travels through his native Náchod, and an honor unit of "partisans" accidentally cuts through high-voltage wires while unveiling a memorial plaque, which then kills in the crowd. After all, it is Professor Černý who writes in one place in his memories: "Historian, know that you will have to start the history of our contemporary national crisis with the scattered and unintentional hangover of Czech minds in the second half of the year forty-five."
