Zahradníci ve městě – Hurmeová Maija (2022)

The story of a community garden with practical advice on how to garden in the city. Lotka, Bianka, and Tomík are three friends from the same city. They love to play spies. While watching a suspicious lady with a stroller full of buckets, they stumble upon an abandoned plot of land that Mrs. Ida tends to with great enthusiasm. The children befriend her, and in return, she teaches them everything about her gardening methods — building raised beds without digging, layering natural materials, and growing vegetables in the acquired plots. The children will learn the secrets of companion planting, composting, and beekeeping. The deserted plot gradually becomes the center of lively neighborhood life. But this idyll doesn't last long. First, someone devastates the peony bed, and then suddenly, surveyors appear... Anyone who carefully tends to their piece of greenery in the city, which replaces nature for them, knows that in stories with a developer plot, not much attention is paid to any flower beds. That is why it is good to read about urban wilderness and think about how useful such forgotten places are. And that it is necessary to fight for their rescue.
