Beschreibung
No work, no pastries. Sometimes, however, it can be done without them. Work determines our personal time, shapes our identity, and revolves around it the organization of the entire modern society. It is simply natural to work or to seek work. However, for most of human history, this has not been the case, and in some cultures, even today, work does not play such a fundamental role as it does in Western society. People in the West live in abundance, in a disrupted environment, and also in the context of accelerating automation of anything. Paradoxically, however, people are working more and more. Anthropologist James Suzman, in his book Work, investigates the sources and causes of the phenomenon of political, cultural, and personal obsession with work. He uncovers the roots of the current conception of work in the ideological disputes of the nineteenth century, but also in the then understanding of biology. Through his own research and historical examples, he shows that it is possible to live and thrive without constant work commitment, especially when humanity has the means and motivation to do so.
