With an ancient friend of his father's, Erik embarks on a quest for a mysterious magical tree, which leads him aboard a pirate ship, into filthy cities, and ultimately into deep forests, where the shadows of the past grow ever darker. Meanwhile, Erik's older brother Dorian grapples with a corrupt criminal underworld and his own decisions, which cause far more than should be possible in a world without the supernatural. The legendary aging pirate Solomon Hejk also sets out in search of answers. He has always thrived on being one step ahead of everyone else. However, tempting fate and one's own fortune cannot last forever.
