Her mother revealed to her that education is the only way to gain a strengthening voice — the ability to speak for herself and make decisions about her future. Instead, her father sells her — Adunni becomes the third wife of a local taxi driver, who can’t wait for her to bear him a son and heir. Adunni escapes to the city in hopes of a better life, but soon realizes that she has no choice but to work for a wealthy family. A submissive daughter, an obedient wife, a powerless slave. Others constantly remind Adunni that she is nobody. Although misfortune temporarily silences her voice, it cannot completely mute it. Adunni realizes that she must stand up not only for herself but also for other girls, and she is determined to speak out in every possible way — in whispers, songs, broken English — until someone hears her.
