A coming-of-age story set in a land that no one would invent. Podlasie, a wooded area between Poland and Belarus, is somewhat of a forgotten land. To this day, it is shrouded in legends and mists, where seemingly strange people live — they have their faith, poverty, and whisperers: women who know how to heal. Or maybe they don't, but everyone believes it. The story of the gravedigger's daughter, Dorota, coming of age in this magical land is narrated by her best friend. The phenomenon of borders and their (un)crossability is as persistent as the refrain of a 90s MTV hit. The world of the living intertwines with the world of the dead, Christian piety with pagan whispering traditions, modern Western cultural impulses blend with local folklore. The heroines of the novel are driven by an unstoppable desire to leave, to cross the border, to break free. But wherever they go, the experience of life on the periphery will always accompany them.
