Beschreibung
Inventions can be a blessing for humanity. And a disaster for individuals. In 2013, all the world's media reported on the conclusions of a scholarly article — nearly half of current jobs could supposedly be replaced by artificial intelligence. Since then, automation has become one of the main social and political topics. One of the authors of the original article, economist Carl Benedikt Frey, continues to focus on automation. However, instead of an uncertain future, Frey studies the past. According to him, humanity is facing a scenario that is all too familiar: this is not the first time that technology is likely to fundamentally transform human society. While it is probable that in the long term and with sufficient distance, humanity will benefit from automation, just as it did during the industrial revolution, that period was, from the perspective of most people at the time, a disaster: living standards and power relations radically deteriorated, leading to many political upheavals. According to Frey, we cannot avoid an automated future — but we can significantly influence what it will look like.
