A humorous novel about the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Young Emira has a tough time — she struggles to find a good job, barely makes rent, and doesn't quite know what to do with her life. A babysitting job with the Chamberlain family helps her pay the bills. One evening, when she takes her little charge to the supermarket, security accuses her of kidnapping. Why? Because two-year-old Briar is white, while Emira is black. Once Briar's mother Alix learns about the incident, she decides that such an injustice must be rectified. This sets off a modern-day comedy of manners, or rather good intentions — which may not turn out so well. Can Alix understand that Emira is not just a victim of racism, but primarily a woman of flesh and blood? And what happens when someone from Alix's past appears in Emira's life?
