Beschreibung
It is said that there are only two kinds of stories: a man sets out on a journey and a stranger arrives in town. However, there is a third: a woman breaks the rules. Fourteen-year-old May is arrested for theft and soon learns her sentence: she will become a sin-eater. One of the hated women who must listen to the confessions of the dying, during the funeral ritual, she must eat foods symbolizing sins, allowing the departing souls to enter heaven. Yet they remain stained by others' transgressions and are condemned to a life on the margins. The newly acquired identity of the forever mute and, for society, preferably invisible sin-eater opens other doors for May. When the queen's maids begin to die under strange circumstances and she must eat the sins from their coffins that the dead did not commit, May decides to investigate why the women had to die and who wished for their deaths. The Sin-Eater offers a captivating tale of betrayal and deceit, of a deadly secret and silence, about powerful women and those socially excluded, about power, but also about the peculiar freedom enjoyed by the outcast with no hope of salvation.
