Ada was born trapped between two worlds. Her parents prayed for her, but now they struggle to cope with the moody and contradictory spirits that inhabit their daughter's body. As Ada matures, her mind begins to splinter into several personalities. After moving from Nigeria to the United States, the individual personalities grow and gain strength based on her further experiences. Ada and these other personalities — Saint Vincent and Asughara, who dress, behave, and feel differently — must cooperate and fight for coexistence. Their attempts to take control of Ada's body turn into a battle for her life. Ada's story, told from several different perspectives — all the personalities hidden within her body — is based on real experiences with mental illness.
