Beschreibung
The prose of Karel Poláček (1892—1945) undoubtedly belongs to the golden fund of Czech literature. From his extensive work, we select two titles for the Czech Library that are among the peaks of his fiction: the novels District Town (1936; the first part of a planned but unfinished pentalogy) and There Were Five of Us (1946), Poláček's most well-known and sought-after title. Experienced editor Marie Havránková partially relies on the edition of both works in the recently completed collected works of Poláček; the commentary is authored by Prof. Jiří Holý, who has long been engaged with Poláček's work.
