Yes, reading is a cultural intruder. The vast majority of our existence on Earth has been spent outside of reading. If we imagine human history as one year, writing (and reading) only appears on December 20th, and since then, it has clung to us like a tick. This publication presents everything that has happened at this cultural December party, starting with the invention of writing and ending with the digital age. It does so in the form of a calendar divided into six historical epochs, mapping approximately seven hundred events that are significant in the context of reading culture. Several times in history, for example, it was believed that we would rid ourselves of reading, perhaps that it would be swallowed by visual culture or that we would return to an oral culture. Yet, nothing has changed so far... Each chapter is preceded by a short introduction that provides not only a basic general historical framing but also places the epoch in the perspective of the reading culture of that time.
