The Nigerian separatist republic of Biafra chose the rising sun as its emblem. But what happens when the sun sets before it has a chance to rise above the horizon? A teenage boy, Ugwu, from a poor village, begins to serve under the mathematics lecturer Odenigbo. Olanna, after studying sociology, escapes from the polished world of her wealthy parents to join revolutionary intellectuals. Her sister Kainene, on the other hand, partially takes over their father's business and meets a shy British writer, Richard. However, the Republic of Biafra, with which they are all somehow connected, is constantly under threat, and as the situation in the country escalates, each of them must choose whether family, politics, or love is most important to them.
