A fairy-tale fantasy inspired by Slavic folklore from the author of In the Shadow of the Hvozd. Mirjem comes from a family of moneylenders, but her father is not particularly skilled in his trade. He is happy to lend to everyone, but then he struggles to ask for repayments, leaving the family on the brink of poverty — until Mirjem intervenes. She hardens herself against the pleas of the villagers, sets out to collect debts, and discovers that she is made for it. When her grandfather gives her a pouch of silver coins, she returns it filled with gold. Soon, word spreads that she can turn silver into gold. However, this attracts the attention of King Staryk — beings who arrive with the first shiver of winter and crave gold. This sets off a series of events that the village girl Wanda, who works for Mirjem because her father cannot afford to pay his debt, and the noblewoman Irina, whom her father wants to marry off to the young tsar, must face together. But even Tsar Mirnatius is not what he seems.
